DescriptionGiving to Sir (domino) Roger Hoolle vicar of Hanley, John Frewyn of Fortehey and William Turnour a tenement with a house built on it, with all appurtenances, situated in the street in Hanley called Roberts End (Robertisyende), between the tenement of John Chester on the east and that of Ellen Frewyn on the west, and lying in length alongside the king's highway (per viam regiam) on the south and a parcel of land belonging to Thomas Hondey on the north; also a parcel of land lying in the field called Cleyfelecontaining four dayworks of arable land, and situated between the land of John Frewyn of Fortey on the east and the lane (venellam) called Kelelaneon the north (west?) and the land of Ellen Frewyn on the south on the one side and Kelecrofton the other, land which Richard the grantor's father along with Henry Hondy recently deceased held of the gift and feoffment of James Goleaffer in Hanley; to be held with all appurtenances to the said Roger, John and William, their heirs and assigns, freely [etc] in perpetuity, of the chief lord of the fee by the services due from the property and lawfully accustomed. Cleyfele and the place names associated with it, see 102, 104 , and the notes there. The orientations as given here are confusing, and there may be some errors. However, since only the main points of the compass were used in the charters when describing land, it was often impossible to be precise; and the scribe here, writing an unusually neat business hand seen again in below, was perhaps not familiar with Hanley.
