1. This seems to be the first appearance of the Hornyold name in relation to Hanley. Nash,Collections(vol 1, 558) and , vol 4, 96, note 38, are mistaken in saying that an earlier John Hornyold witnessed a deed at Hanley in 1334 and that the family therefore "had long been settled in Hanley". The deed in question deals with a messuage in Worcester, and was sealed and witnessed there; John had been sheriff of the county in 1315 and later. In the charter above this later John is one of a group of trustees; it shows an interest in Hanley at this period, which he developed by leases of Blackmore Park (c. 1547) and Hanley manor (1555), until in 1560 he purchased the manor, including the park, from queen Elizabeth
