TitleBond of Richard Baron of Hanley, gentleman (yeint' )
DescriptionWho is held and bound to Richard Lechemer in the sum of £20 sterling to be paid next Easter; the condition of the obligation is that if Richard Baron his heirs or assigns claim title to parcel of a mere called Whytmer of which Richard Lechemer is seised by the gift and feoffment of Edmund Rudyng or if they disturb the said Richard Lechemer of the possession of the said parcel of mere, then the present obligation stands, but otherwise it will be void. Sealing clause.

Seal (on tongue) : red wax, device of shield quarterly, with birds in the quarters; legend illegible.

1. This is the first bond in the Lechmere archive. The first part of the bond is typically written in Latin, with the obligation in English on the dorse (Alcock, Title Deeds, 48). It is the third of three related documents written on successive days, namely the grant, the quitclaim and the bond; but the bond is in a different hand.
2. Presumably Richard Baron had had an interest in the land in question at some point and there was a possibility of dispute. The actual "white mere" or pool (OE ), from which the Whitemere family apparently took their name, has not been located, but it was probably in the east of the manor, where they had their main interests.
