DescriptionGiving to Richard Lechemer a croft called Voveleywith one headland (hedlond), [extending] in length from the road called Holeweyon the south and the land of the said Richard Lechemer on the north; also 14 selions of arable land in Lechemersfele, of which six selions lie in breadth between the land of Richard Baron on the east and that of the said Richard Lechemer on the west and in length between the land of Richard Baron on the south and Northfeleheche on the north; two selions lie in the same field, in breadth between the land of Richard Baron on the east and that of Richard Lechemer on the west and in length between the land of Roger Bagger and Northfeleheche; two selions lie in the same field, in breadth between the land of Richard Baron on the west and that of Nicholas Carpynter on the east, and in length between the land of Richard Lechemer on the north and that of Richard Baron, John Wyse and Richard Lechemer on the south; [and] four selions lie in the same field, in length between the road (viam) leading towards Le Hammyson the east and the land of Richard Lechemer on the west and in breadth between the land formerly belonging to William Stocke on the north and that of Richard Lechemer on the south; [and] giving to the same William [Stocke]two acres of arable land lying in Northfield (Le Northfele), of which one acre lies in length between Wylyngyson the east and Odemedewon the west and in breadth between the land of Richard and William Stocke on the south and that once belonging to Nicholas Grove on the north; six butts and a gore lie in length between the land of Richard Lechemer on the south [north boundary not given] and in breadth between the land once belonging to Nicholas Grove on the east and that once belonging to William Stocke on the west; and three butts lie in the same field, in length between Bandyisput on the east and the land of Robert Pecocke on the west and in breadth between the land of Richard Lechemer [other bounds not given]; and giving to the same Richard Lechemer one selion lying in Le Kyngynhull, in length between the land recently belonging to Henry Seerde on the east and that of Nicholas Carpynter on the west and in breadth between the land of Richard Stocke and William Stocke on the south and Churchelondon the north;[all] to be held with all appurtenances to the said Richard Lechemer, his heirs and assigns [William Stocke not included in this clause], in perpetuity, of the chief lord of the fee by the services due from the land and lawfully accustomed. Seal: red wax (1) device of letter T (Lombardic); (2) device of a sword (centrally), with a key and other (indecipherable) elements.

1. The charter is unusual in that apparently it concerns separate grants of land to two different people; but since it does not appear in the tenure clause, William Stocke's name may be repeated in error in the second paragraph, being picked up by the scribe from the previous sentence.
2. If a plan is drawn of the land described in this charter it is noticeable that in both Lechmeresfield and Northfield some selions run east-west and others north-south. There may be several reasons for this in such large arable areas, but one possibility is that it reflects a system of "furlongs"; thirteen furlong names appear in the documents (Toomey, Medieval Woodland Manor, 93, 262).
