Description | Delivering to Thomas Lechemer, second son of the same Richard and Joan his wife, their whole messuage with all lands, meadows, pastures, pasture rights and other appurtenances, lying near Rhydd Green (Ryddegrene) in the lordship and fee of Hanley; and also all their lands with appurtenances in the Northfield (Le Northefeyld) of Hanley, as indicated by the metes and bounds there, except two selions of land lying together and extending as far as a certain meadow called Eyghtmenmedowe except one long selion of land with appurtenances in the same field extending over (Kyndonhyll); and also three dayworks of land with one butt with appurtenances lying in various places in a certain field commonly called Le Shawe , of which two dayworks lie together between the lands recently belonging to the earl of Warwick on the west and those of Thomas Smythe on the east, and the third daywork of land with the butt, containing in itself six selions, lies in various parts in the place commonly called Radeley, as is indicated by the metes and bounds there; and also a quarter of a meadow with appurtenances called Onnerhale in the parish and fee of Hanley, lying next to the field called Le Shawe on the west and next to the meadow belonging to the parish church of Hanley [on the east]; and also the whole of that croft of land or pasture with appurtenances called Hyllenheye lying on the south of the field called Le Shawe; and also all their land with appurtenances in the field called Shorteleys and two dayworks of land with appurtenances in a certain field commonly called Longeleys, as indicated by the metes and bounds there; and also their half of a field, land or pasture with appurtenances called Le Hyettes, lying next to the king's highway (regiam viam); and also the whole of their meadow with appurtenances lying in Severn Meadow (Severnemedowe), [extending] from Le Oldecroftesyende as far as the upper edge of the said Severn Meadow, the whole of their meadow with appurtenances lying in Le Westmore except that part lying along with the meadow there which belongs to the service of St Clement in the church of Hanley, and two parts of their meadow with appurtenances lying together in Eyghtmenmedowenext to the meadow of Henry Hanley; all of which property [the grantors] recently held jointly, along with other lands and tenements, with Richard Tele their cofeoffee, now recently dead, of the gift of John Turnour and William Hanley feoffees of the said Richard Lechemer deceased by a charter executed for them and sealed by the said John and William; to be held to Thomas Lechemer, his heirs and assigns, in perpetuity, of the chief lords of those fees by the services due from the property and lawfully accustomed. 1. Crofts might be used as arable or pasture, and the phrase "land or pasture" is here seen for the first time in the charters. 2. The trustees of Richard Lechmere's will (see note 1) are handing over to Thomas, among other tenements, the house at Rhydd Green (later Rhydd Court) where his mother had lived; perhaps she then moved to Le Whittemere, thus exchanging houses with her son. The messuage at Severn End was probably occupied during this period by Thomas's brother John, eldest son of Richard and Joan Lechmere : Toomey, Medieval Woodland Manor, 195-6.
