1. Thomas Biston was a notable figure in Hanley in the first half of the sixteenth century, one of the new men in a period when the Crown was in control (see also note 1). Eventually (1514) he was a groom of the chamber (L & P Hen VIII , vol 1, 3408/5). He is first noticed as bailiff of Hanley in 1507 (PRO SC6 Hen VII/993), when he rendered the manorial account, and he (or his son?) was still bailiff in 1534 (PRO SC6 Hen VIII/4017). Between 1509 and 1521 he was also at times described as keeper of Blackmore park (e.g. L & P Hen VIII , vol 1, 94/47; PRO SC6 Hen VIII/4005). He came to live in Hanley, and his property in Church End will be seen in below. He dealt in the lands of the dissolved Little Malvern priory (), and died about 1545 (WCRO BA 8789 Ref 899.49/ii).
2. The Berington family, seen here for the first time in Hanley, became (by marriage) in the early eighteenth century lords of the manor of Little Malvern (VCH Worcs, vol 3, 450), and their muniments include some important chase documents (WCRO BA 81 Ref 705.24).
