TitleCharter of John Crofte gentleman, son and heir of John Crofte esquire, deceased
DescriptionGiving to Edward Wallewen 26s 8d sterling of annual rents in satisfaction of his father's debts to Elizabeth Frewen and in recognition of the good service to be paid to him later by the said Edward, whom he has appointed to be his true bailiff for and in his manor of [sc. in] Hanley Castle and for all lands and tenements, rents, services, profits, exactions and perquisites of that manor or of [other] lands and tenements in county Worcester (Wigorn') to be held, [namely] both the annual rents, to be paid by his tenants at the usual terms, and the said office [of bailiff] with all its customary revenues, fees and profits, for Edward's life, by rendering to John Crofte and his heirs an annual account of [the same]; and he may retain one heriot in his own hands. Warranty clause, guaranteeing the rents and Edward's office of bailiff. Sealing clause.
Witnesses at the sealing and delivery of the document (on dorse, in English) : Sir Richard Hul priest, Andrew Alsopp, John Favell, John Moritt and Thomas Warrell citizens of Worcester (Worcestre)
Dated at : [no place given].
1. The manor in the text is the submanor of Hanley Hall, not the manor of Hanley Castle, which was with the Crown. For the Crofts, see note 1. Elizabeth Frewen was Wallewen's sister, and he presumably received the rents as her trustee.
2. The last four witnesses are not Hanley names and are presumably all citizens of Worcester.
