The Holocaust: Understanding the Role of Divine Presence in Jewish History, Tradition, and Responses to Auschwitz

Dr. Luke Devine examines the role of divine presence in Jewish history, tradition, and responses to the Holocaust. In the process, Luke identifies how traditional understandings of divine presence, Shekhinah, in Jewish history, tradition, and modernity have underpinned responses to Auschwitz. These responses have precedents in earlier Jewish traditions and in new and developing Judaisms that continue to wrestle with the impact and legacy of Auschwitz and the question of divine presence in history since biblical and rabbinic times. In particular, the lecture focuses on Shekhinah as a continuity and presence in shaping understandings of suffering both historically and in responding to the Holocaust.

This talk accompanies an international touring exhibition called Between Life and Death: Stories of Rescue During the Holocaust that will be on display at The Hive throughout February.
