TitleLetters from George William Coventry, Viscount Deerhurst and 7th Earl of Coventry
DescriptionLetters sent by Lady Barbara's son in law [stepson], the future 7th Earl of Coventry, largely concerning his attempts to reconcile himself with his father and his hopes of Barbara aiding him in securing his father's forgiveness. His father (George William, 6th Earl of Coventry) appears to be angry with him for his repeated indiscretions and apparent accumulation of debts.
Item 705:73 BA14450/287/7 (1) is sent from Portsmouth on the eve of his leaving the country [to set sail to fight in the American War of Independence]. He talks of his hopes of his father forgiving him, 'yet if I should on my return find his resolutions unalterable (which God forbid) I must live a victim of my own indiscretions'.
In item 705:73 BA14450/287/7 (6) he talks of 'settling my affairs and hope in a short time to be quite out of debt'.
In item 705:73 BA14450/287/7 (10) he seeks assistance from Barbara as he doesn't have enough money for the education of his children.
Items 705:73 BA14450/287/7 (10-20) are undated.
