TitleLetter from Lansdowne [John Henry Petty, 2nd Marquess of Lansdowne (1765-1809)]
DescriptionLetter sent from Lansdowne House [London], which sends thanks to Lord Coventry for forwarding a letter written by Lord Nelson. Believes it to be a 'precious relic which should never be suffered to go out of your own family' and thus will deliver it back to him. On the second page of the paper is a copy of a letter sent from Nelson Bronte [Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté (1758-1805)] in the hand of Lord Lansdowne. The letter talks of Lord Coventry's brother being very soon going into battle and that he will be very happy to have him with him should he [Nelson] be again called into service. Warns of the difficulty of making applications for particular ships.
This letter is not the original sent by Lord Nelson, the whereabouts of this letter are unknown. The original letter was written 2 months before Lord Nelson's death in the Battle of Trafalgar in Spain, 21 October 1805.
