DescriptionThe Hop Market was originally held in the Workhouse, hence the close relationship between the Guardians of the Poor and the administration of the market.

After 1841 there were two Committees, one to oversee the property, accounts and other high-level management, and another, smaller assistant committee to attend to the daily running of the market. The Guardians were originally given powers in an Act of Parliament to have the hop market in the Workhouse. Membership of the committee later increased as more Hop Market administrative staff were employed, such as the Clerk of the Hop Market. Often other individuals attended meetings for a particular reason. The committee had the authority to deal with the day-to-day business, but reported and made recommendations to the Guardians with regards to significant changes.
