DescriptionColour photograph of the painting "Rover" by Coventry; Gilbert (1668-1719); 4th Earl of Coventry; 8th Baron of Allesborough, Viscount Deerhurst, dating from the early 18th century. The collar of the dog is inscribed with the Latin words "Naribus Utilis" meaning "good with his nose", under this is a line from Virgil "et grossum canes commitantur herilem" meaning "the dog accompanies his masters steps". The reverse of the photograph has written in pen "'Rover' by Gilbert 4th Earl of Coventry. Owned by Sir Richard Carew Pole Antony House Cornwall". A photocopy of a typed piece about the painting was sellotaped to the photograph, now detached (Item 705:73 BA14450/277/12 (6)). Print.
