TitleCoal
DescriptionRecords relating to the Coventry family's lands in Griff and Chilvers Coton [now in Nuneaton], Warwickshire, which were utilised as sites for the extraction of coal. The collection includes deeds providing evidence of the Coventrys' title to the land, dating from 1561 to 1670. The lands in Griff and Chilvers Coton were leased to Sir Richard Newdigate for 21 years by Thomas Coventry, 1st Earl of Coventry and 5th Baron of Allesborough in the late 17th century. The lease is claimed to have included a covenant for renewal upon the expiration of the original 21 year lease, however, in November 1694 Thomas, 1st Earl of Coventry conveyed the reversion of the premises in fee simple to his son, Gilbert Coventry, by deed of lease and release, for a pre-nuptial settlement for a marriage to be had between Gilbert and Dorothy Keyte, 2nd daughter of Sir William Keyte, then of Ebington, Gloucestershire. When Newdigate requested a renewal of the lease in 1705, Gilbert Coventry claimed that it was not within his power to grant such a lease. In response to Gilbert's refusal to renew the lease, Newdigate presented a Bill of Complaint against him in Chancery. The existing records include the papers relating to this court case, including the Bill of Complaint, Gilbert Coventry's answers, depositions of witnesses and correspondence relating to the case. The papers also include 2 work books and diaries kept for Sir Richard Newdigate's coal works, 1684-85, and 3 plans, which show the areas of land belonging to Gilbert Coventry that relate to Sir Richard Newdigate's coal delph in Griff and Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire.
