Item 705:73 BA14450/296/13 (6) talks of being 'beyond measure distressed at the melancholy accident that has befallen poor George' [in reference to the hunting accident which blinded George William, Viscount Deerhurst, eldest son of the 8th Earl of Coventry]. Item 705:73 BA14450/296/13 (8) talks of the funeral of the Duke [?]. Also, sends congratulations to 'you and the Country on the change of ministry. A Ray at last dawns on our sinking constitution' [in reference to the resignation of Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne on 14 November 1834, to be succeeded by Sir Robert Peel. Peel failed to secure a majority in the House of Commons in the January 1835 General Election and the Whigs returned to power under Melbourne in April 1835]. Item 705:73 BA14450/296/13 (9) talks of the ill health of Lady Coventry [Margaret 'Peggy' Pitches, Countess of Coventry, mother of George William, 8th Earl of Coventry]. Item 705:73 BA14450/296/13 (10) talks of the death of Mr. Joliffe. Item 705:73 BA14450/296/13 (11) talks of his being ordered to go to India, which 'is a very great nuisance - disliking the country as I do', and of Lord Coventry's offer to intercede on the matter on his behalf. Item 705:73 BA14450/296/13 (12) is sent from Alexandria [Egypt], where he is waiting the next English steamer. Talks of the plague in Cairo, which is causing around 50 deaths per day. States that Willoughby [his son] is with him and has been attacked severely by rheumatism. Item 705:73 BA14450/296/13 (13) talks of thieves entering the Queen's Hotel, Cheltenham and taking off with his writing desk, containing all of his 'orders and stars and badges'.
