TitleLetters from P. C. [Lady Margaret 'Peggy' Pitches (d.1840), Countess of Coventry, mother of George William, 8th Earl of Coventry]
DescriptionLetters sent to her son, largely concerning family affairs and letters of affection. Item 705:73 BA14450/295/14 (1) talks of the inevitable ruin of every branch of the family unless he obliterates 'the late subject of misery in our family [... which the town..] would be delighted to publish' [in reference to the indiscretions of lady Mary Beauclerk, his 2nd wife, who had various adulterous affairs and gave birth to an illegitimate child].
Item 705:73 BA14450/295/14 (6) talks of Mr Jenner's advice regarding Rob[e]rt not following any person with a parcel according to her instructions, but he states that 'the birth of a child can be equally proved by the subpoena [and] evidence of Dr C. and Mrs L [Loran]'. [in reference to the illegitimate child born to Lady Mary Beauclerk, which was smuggled out of the house by a maid and taken to an unknown address]. States 'I do not think Lady M. [Mary] would relinquish the future Countess-ship for the whole of Sir H's [Henry's] property'.
Item 705:73 BA14450/295/14 (7) talks of how Dr C. and Mrs Loran cannot in anyway avoid a full disclosure of every circumstance [surrounding the birth of the illegitimate child], therefore 'nothing is to be lamented in not having stopped the child-porter'. States 'the clandestine business I should hope would render it impossible to affiliate the new born upon our family, and non access duly registered will confirm the illegitimacy'. Talks of articles of separation. No job available for Mrs Clay's daughter at present but when she returns to Croome will see if the girls are fit to be taken into the house for kitchen or other duties.
Item 705:73 BA14450/295/14 (13) states Lord John Campbell's son has died. Hopes 'that Mrs C-y [Coventry] goes on well' [Lord Coventry was separated from his wife at this point and was unable to remarry, therefore it is unclear to whom this refers. It is possibly a mistress that was accepted into the Coventry household, and was referred to in this manner despite never legally marrying the 8th Earl].
Item 705:73 BA14450/295/14 (14) talks of Mr Morland's work on the household account, though there are still odd bills to be paid.
