DescriptionLeather bound volume which contains a copy of a letter sent [January 1877] by George William, 9th Earl of Coventry concerning the racing of horses and how it affects roaring disease [laryngeal hemiplegia] amongst them. This letter was sent with a view to publishing the responses if appropriate. The proceeding pages contain copy 'answers to the foregoing letter, which was sent to a few of the principal authorities in England and Ireland' written in the 9th Earl's hand. Responses included are from: Earl of Stradbrooke; Earl of Macclesfield; David Paley, V.S.; Jas. Preston; J. Mannington M.R.C.V.S; G. Lane Fox; Alexander Mavor; W. J. Stanley; Joshua East; R. Chapman; Earl of Shannon; H. R. Phillips; Viscount Combermere and J. Austruther Thomson.
The reverse of the volume contains entries relating to Hereford Cattle bought and sold by the 9th Earl in 1882.
Two loose items included are an 1831 Ascot Heath Races Windsor card, detailing the races and sweepstakes; and a letter sent to the 9th Earl from William Day, 15th September [18]67 concerning horse racing.
