TitleLetters from Willoughby Cotton [Sir Willoughby Cotton, husband of Lady Augusta Coventry]
DescriptionLetters sent which talk largely of his work abroad [in various countries serving as a General in the army, throughout the Napoleonic wars and later] and of his affections for his wife, Lady Augusta Coventry.
Item 705:73 BA14450/290/290/5 (1) talks of Lord Coventry being granted the titles 'Marquis of Malvern [this title never appears to have been granted], Earl of Coventry, Viscount Deerhurst and Baron Allesborough [a former title held by the Earls of Coventry which became extinct on the death of Gilbert, 4th Earl of Coventry]'.
Item 705:73 BA14450/290/290/5 (2) talks of being fortunate 'in having been attached by the Commander in Chief to Sir Arthur Wellesley [Wellesley, Arthur (1769-1852) 1st Duke of Wellington, Field Marshal, statesman] [who] is a most enterprising and capital officer. States that Bonaparte [Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France (1769-1821)] is now in Paris.
Item 705:73 BA14450/290/290/5 (8) talks of demanding an apology from Mr Craufurd [A. C. Craufurd] for a letter he wrote to Lady Augusta Cotton [nee Coventry] in which he made threats towards her character. Appears to have been about to undertake a duel when Craufurd signed an apology. Questions Augusta's behaviour towards Lady Barbara Coventry to have provoked this.
Item 705:73 BA14450/290/290/5 (10) sends a newspaper extract relating to the intended duel between Sir Willoughby Cotton and Mr Craufurd , hoping that the 7th Earl will realise how inaccurately it has been reported.
