TitlePapers relating to the Trial of Admiral Byng
Description1 Copy of the decision of the Court Martial assembled on board HMS St George in Portmouth Harbour in the trial of the Hon[oura]ble John Byng, Admiral of the Blue Squadron of HM Fleet who was charged with not doing enough to destroy the French Fleet and relieve St Philip's Castle on the Island of Minorca which was beseiged by French forces, [1757]

With recommendation to the Right Hon[oura]ble the Lords Commiss[ione]rs for executing the Office of L[or]d High Admiral of Great Britain from the President and Members of the Court Martial for clemency and notes on the case.

The court martial of Admiral Byng (1706-1757) was presided over by Admiral Smith. Byng was sentenced to be shot with a recommendation for mercy, but the King did not grant this and the sentence was carried out.

2 Copy of an account of the Battle of Minorca 1756 [1757]

It seems from the contents of the account that this may be an account by Captain Young of the Intrepid as it descibes what happened to that ship in the course of the battle.
