Minutes of the Hop Market Committee. Matters discussed include grievances of Hop Merchants regarding the lack of capacity of the market and the misconduct of the hop porters and weighers, which combined were the complaints that lead to the establishment of the Committee; charges imposed for service; removal or resignation of named individuals for misbehaviour, age or infirmity; imposition of changes to the system for weighing and porterage; statistics concerning hops weighed and monies involved; copies of communications and notices sent or received; names, description of the duties and salaries of various staff of the Hop Market; building, improvement and repair works, including any objections, and the tenders and records of payments to named individuals who carried out such works; audit of accounts; inspections of premises; payment of rates; leasing of properties, sometimes with the tenant's name and conditions of the tenancy listed; market rules and regulations; an 1859 dispute between Thomas Gibbs and Mr Turner over the payment and delivery of hops, with extracts from the statements of the parties involved; reports; public hops auctions; lists of the Guardians and their assistants (the Hopmarket Committee); mortgages and loans; 1867 accident to James Taylor and his successful lawsuit for compensation; creation of sub or extraordinary committees for particular purposes; applicants for jobs in 1881 giving names, addresses and brief employment histories; complaints from and about tenants and customers; installation of gas, water and electricity; rights of way; railways and trams;major construction work carried out in 1897 along Foregate Street; insurance (people and property).
