TitlePensions Committee
DescriptionThe committee was established in 1908 as a response to the Old Age Pensions Act 1908 to assess claims made for pensions. For the first year the city was divided into five areas (St John, St Nicholas and All Saints, St Peter, Claines and St Martins) with a 9-person sub-committee appointed for each. Subsequent years saw Pensions Officers allocated to each district who reported back to a general Pensions Committee meeting. Meetings were held monthly. From 1920 the Council also became responsible for the maintenance of the blind over the age of 16. Those who could be trained or found employment were helped to do so, either in their own homes or at institutions like the Birmingham Institute for the Blind.
