Description | Various notes and other items collected during the course of Alderman Brotherton's research, comprising:
1 - Elgar Memorial. Letters, telegrams, newspaper clippings and programmes concerning the Elgar Memorial Fund and window in the Cathedral, most dated from the 1930s. Includes a copy of the telegram sent to and from the King informing him of Elgar's death.
2 - Postcards sent from Miss Stinton in 1961. The four postcards have not been written on. All four are reproductions of hand-drawn, sepia tinged scenes of Worcester in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Shows a timber-framed building in All Saints with two people standing outside and a church in the background; another timber framed building in All Hallows with a woman and child walking passed; a large thatched building in Friar Street with a brick building in the background; and a group of cottages alongside a track and a field in the Old Tithing.
3 - The Civet Cat. Letter from Kay & Company Ltd dated 1960 about the company history and pages of handwritten notes tracing the history of the company and owners.
4 - Letter from Richard Stevens dated 1950 asking for assistance dating a photograph of St John's church, with the church in the background and the manned toll booth and toll gates in the foreground, dating from the early twentieth century. With stamped addressed envelope for a response.
5 - Booklet entitled 'The Guesten Hall, Worcester'. Covers torn off. Handwritten photostat giving the history of the Hall with illustrations, in part based on archaeological excavations.
6 - St Andrew's Spire and Bell. Two pages of notes, one written on the reverse of a timetable of meetings for January 1957.
7 - Booklet 'The Bicentenary of Old St Martin's Church 1772 - 1972' by Eric Baker.
8 - Description and particulars of construction of the Grand Organ, built by Nicholson & Co for the Public Hall, Worcester, with a compliment slip from the manufacturer dated 1959.
9 - Rules of the Royal Albert Orphanage (formerly the Royal Albert Orphan Asylum) dated 1911; a copy of a 1865 election day nomination for the admission to the Orphanage of Mary Burden aged 9 1/2; an undated letter (probably 1940 - 1960s) to Brotherton from an Ellen Robinson, who appears to be related to the Burden family; a 1935 letter from D Whitehead, Master of the Royal Albert Orphanage briefly recounting the institution's history.
10 - Six postcards of various views of the exterior and interior features of Worcester Cathedral, and one of a horse and cart on the Jubilee Drive, Malvern, spanning approximately 1908 - 1943. Two have been written. With 1974 covering note from depositer.
11 - Handwritten notes concerning the founding of Alice Ottley School in Britannia Square.
12 - Booklet 'The Greyfriars Worcester the House and its Restoration' dated 1951.
13 - St Swithun's Church. Numerous newspaper articles from the local press dated 1950s and 1960s about the history of and furnishings in the church, especially the organ and Mayor's seat, with a letter dated 1960 regarding the Mayor's seat at St Nicholas, and handwritten notes that are predominantly about the man who paid for St Swithin's organ.
14 - King Charles House, 29 New Street. Correspondence, plans (various scales, some on paper, treated linen and tissue paper), newspaper clippings, condition reports and requests for repairs, copies of leases and copied extracts of histories of Worcester, all relating to the lease of the building, its purchase by the Council in 1942, and maintenance. Dated 1938 - 1957.
15 - Queen Elizabeth House. Handwritten notes and extracts from documents, undated photocopied plans (probably nineteenth century) of Trinity Street and St Swithin Street and the immediate surroundings, newspaper clippings from the Worcester Evening News & Times, various letters from members of the public in response to Brotherton's 1959 request for memories of how the house was relocated in 1891.
16 - Sidbury. Newspapers clippings, plans, letters from the Cromwell Association, extracts copied from documents and overview of Civil War events, regarding an historic building at 56 Sidbury [the Commandery?] and commemorative plaque for the Battle of Worcester. Dated 1950s. |
