TitleConsistory Court Cases and Precedents
DescriptionThe consistory court is one of the ecclesiastical courts. Every Church of England diocese has a consistory court. Until 1858 they exercised jurisdiction over matrimonial and probate matters. Gradually other areas of jurisdiction, such as dealing with the crimes of clerks or defamation cases, were removed in the nineteenth century. Since then, consistory courts have mostly dealt with matters concerning church property and churchyards, and also clergy below the rank of bishop accused of misconduct.
