Picture shows: the washing-up sink and separate hand basin, with walls tiled behind basins and Ascot water heater with pipe to either basin, fitted in a corner of the back shop. This modern grocery store is a conversion from an old shop in very old premises in The Shambles, now a scheduled ancient monument. 24 September 1956.

No. 5 - Lnamaff 74452. Food hygiene in Worcester. British Standards, the Shambles. Picture shows: the formica topped and fronted counter with glass screens in front of and over unwrapped goods on display. Shelves are painted and easily kept clean. This modern grocery store is a conversion from an old shop in very old premises in The Shambles, now a scheduled ancient monument. 24 September 1956. [Two female shop assistants behind counter]

No. 6 - Lnamaff 74453. Food hygiene in Worcester. J.C. Morris (Pork Butcher), 27 the Shambles. Picture shows: the washing up facilities provided in this hygienic looking butcher's shop converted from very old premises which have a back entry or yard. Good use has been made of available space. Floor is tiled and half the wall, remainder painted. 24 September 1956.

No. 7 - Lnamaff 74454. Food hygiene in Worcester. J.C. Morris (Pork Butcher), 27 the Shambles. Picture shows: the washing up facilities provided in this hygienic looking butcher's shop converted from very old premises which have a back entry or yard. Floor is terazzo tiled, tables mica topped, with stainless steel utensils and plastic trays for displaying meat. On right is refrigerator door. 24 September 1956. No. 8 - Lnamaff 74455. Food hygiene in Worcester. Worcester Central Co-operative Butchery, Silver Street. Picture shows: A photograph taken in the newly decorated premises shortly before they were officially opened. A handwashing basin and washing-up sink, both with hot and cold water, have been provided in the entrance hall. Walls and floor are fully tiled. 24 September 1956.

No. 9 - Lnamaff 74456. Food hygiene in Worcester. A Kobiec, 22 Lowesmoor. Picture shows: a good example of modernisation carried out by a small trader in old premises. Glass screens for the counter were still on order when the photograph was taken. 24 September 1956.

No. 10 - Lnamaff 74457. Food hygiene in Worcester. A Kobiec, 22 Lowesmoor. Picture shows: white-painted, easily kept clean shelves for the display of wrapped goods. This shop is a good example of modernisation carried out by a small trader in old premises. 24 September 1956.

No. 11 - Lnamaff 74458. Food hygiene in Worcester. Hop Pole Milk Bars Ltd., Foregate Street. Picture shows: the stainless steel washing machine, with racks for drying crockery, in the kitchen. The wall behind machine is white tiled. Chefs [two pictured] wear clean white overalls and hats. 24 September 1956.

No. 12 - Lnamaff 74459. Food hygiene in Worcester. Hop Pole Milk Bars Ltd., Foregate Street. Picture shows: the grill room. Points of interest are black plastic behind grills (infra red grill on right), food displayed on plastic topped counter is protected by glass, chefs [three pictured] wearing white overalls and hats, easily cleaned chairs and stools of modern design, simple, easily cleaned, plastic topped tables and side counters. 24 September 1956.

No. 13 - Lnamaff 74460. Food hygiene in Worcester. Hop Pole Milk Bars Ltd., Foregate Street. Picture shows: the snack bar. All food displayed on the plastic topped counter is behind glass screens, fruit juices are in dispensers, waitresses [two pictured] wearing white overalls and caps. Wall is tiled and tea urns set in recess with steam extractor. Snacks are warmed in an electric glass fronted pie warmer. 24 September 1956.

No. 14 - Lnamaff 74461. Food hygiene in Worcester. L. H. Fearis, Foregate Street. Picture shows: The entrance to a glass fronted Fishmonger and poulterer's shop. 24 September 1956.

No. 15 - Lnamaff 74462. Food hygiene in Worcester. H. A. Thompson, Angel Place. Picture shows: A small modernised glass fronted fishmongers shop where the ceiling as well as floor and walls are fully tiled. The sink [being used by employee] is conveniently situated in recess behind counter, the chandeliers and poultry rails are of stainless steel, good ventilation is obtained through window at back and the whole aspect is one of freshness and hygiene. Eventually the windows will be steel framed. 24 September 1956.

No. 16 - Lnamaff 74463. Food hygiene in Worcester, F.I.C. Hutton, 7 Angel Place. Picture shows: a clean, modern type fried fish restaurant with glass and stainless steel counter, hand washing basin for staff and the whole decorated in pastel colours which give it a cool and fresh appearance. There is a good accommodation for those eating on the premises. 24 September 1956.

No. 17 - Lnamaff 74464. Food hygiene in Worcester. The Horn and Trumpet, the Marstons. Picture shows: [female employee rinsing glasses at] the stainless steel sink with draining boards provided behind each bar. 24 September 1956.

The following black and white photographs, mounted on black card, are a range of sizes and again primarily relating to food hygiene. Studio photos to illustrate good and bad practises in food preparation and hygiene. All are probably c.1956.

No. 18 - Picture shows a man in chef whites making black pudding [?] sandwiches in a kitchen whilst picking his nose.

No. 19 - Picture shows a woman in an apron holding open the door to a lavatory.

No. 20 - Picture shows a man's right hand with a plaster on the index finger.

No. 21 - Picture shows a close up of a man's hands slicing foodstuff, with a tattered piece of cloth bandaging his index finger.

No. 22 - Picture shows three trays of pork pies, sandwiches and cold meat, arranged on a clean tablecloth and covered with transparent plastic lids.

No. 23 - Picture shows the same trays as above, without the plastic lids and with stains on the tablecloth. Flies have been drawn onto the food.

No. 24 - Picture shows a close up of dirty hands being washed and covered in soap bubbles.

No. 25 - Picture shows a bowl of soup being set down on a restaurant table with the waitress's thumb in the soup.

No. 26 - Picture shows cramped, narrow and ramshackle brick backyard outhouses in a paved alley, in the Tything, with a signboard for the Lamb and Flag Public House just visible.

No. 27 - Picture shows the Arboretum, taken from Lansdowne Crescent over the canal towards St Mary's Church.
